Methodology
How we measure where a strain is sold
Snapshot date: October 3, 2026 (all times UTC). Every figure comes from Weedmaps menu listings captured that day; nothing was estimated or filled in by hand.
What we measure
For the flagship guides we look at flower sold under the strain’s name around the center of selected US cities: how many stores list it, how many menu items carry it, and what an eighth (3.5 g) costs. The eight flagship strains (Blue Dream, Sour Diesel, Green Crack, Northern Lights, Purple Urkle, Blue Cheese, Cinderella 99 and Hindu Kush) cover 27 markets, one city per state; Pineapple Express, used only in comparisons, covers the eight largest of those markets. Single-page guides link discovery sources without publishing these store snapshots.
Where the data comes from
- Source: Weedmaps, the largest US cannabis marketplace and menu platform. We read the same public menu data the Weedmaps website shows shoppers, for a fixed point in each city.
- Radius: 50 miles from the city center, which is Weedmaps’ own default search radius for strain pages. Listings across a state line are excluded (for example New York stores inside Newark’s circle).
- Disclosure: Official Cannabis’s founder co-founded Weedmaps and remains a shareholder. Weedmaps did not commission, review or pay for this work.
Which menu items count
- Flower only. Pre-rolls, vapes, edibles and concentrates filed under flower are removed by name (pre-roll, joint, cart, gummy, rosin, live resin and similar words).
- The strain name must appear as a phrase in the product name. Weedmaps’ strain tag alone is noisy in both directions: it tags unrelated products and misses many correctly named ones. Spelling variants count (Purple Urkle and Purple Urkel; Northern Light and Northern Lights); abbreviations such as “Sour D” or “C99” do not.
- No crosses or blends. Items such as “Blue Dream x Sour Jack” are dropped.
- No distinct strains that extend the name. Names that denote a different strain are dropped and counted separately, for example Super Sour Diesel, Purple Hindu Kush, Northern Lights Haze, Green Crack Kush, Blue Cheese Bubblegum, Super Blue Dream and Blue Dream Haze. Regional or numbered names for the same strain stay in, such as East Coast Sour Diesel, Santa Cruz Blue Dream and Northern Lights #5.
How prices are computed
- We use the listed menu price, including any sale price shown. Tax handling varies by store; promo codes and deals are not applied.
- Median eighth (exact): only items sold as a 1/8 oz or a 3.45–3.6 g pack, with no scaling. This is the figure our guides quote as “the price of an eighth”.
- Median per 3.5 g (all sizes): every priced pack scaled to 3.5 g. Bulk ounces and shake pull this number down.
- Items with no readable weight, conflicting weights, or hidden prices are counted but not priced. Infused flower is counted but not priced.
Limitations
- Weedmaps is not the whole market. Many stores use other menu providers, so a low count reflects Weedmaps’ menus, not the market. Some legal markets showed zero or one listing on the snapshot date.
- Names are not genetics. A product called Blue Dream at one store may be different genetics from another.
- One snapshot. Menus change daily, and stock and freshness cannot be checked. We refresh these numbers on a schedule and show the capture date next to every table.
- Medical-only markets serve registered patients, and some hide prices.
Germany: weed.de pharmacy listings
The German pharmacy snapshot covers prescription cannabis products on weed.de, a German medical cannabis marketplace. Flagship guides show products matched to the strain name in its October 3, 2026 catalogue, where matches are available.
- Source: every product page on weed.de (2,443 pages), read with Firecrawl. From each page we take the producer, product type, the strain weed.de assigns, THC and CBD as labelled, irradiation, country of origin, the lowest and highest pharmacy price, and the number of pharmacies listing the product.
- Which products count: a product counts for a strain when weed.de names that strain as the product’s strain (ignoring case and punctuation; spelling variants as above). Crosses and other strains do not count.
- Prices: the lowest and highest prices pharmacies showed on weed.de, per gram for flower and per milliliter for extracts, as displayed. They are not offers: a prescription is required.
- Limitations: weed.de shows the pharmacies that list their stock there, not every pharmacy in Germany, and stock changes daily. THC and CBD are the producers’ label values, not our lab data.
- Disclosure: weed.de is run by Official Cannabis’s publisher, Justin Hartfield (president), and its editor-at-large, Richard Cowan (CEO).
